If only I would actually remember to keep posting here.

Anyway, I'm currently developing a patch called [069] Polish Sludge, in honour of the new Polish school of the mid 20th century, and because It can make anything and everything sound like a bog of sludge. It uses simple time manipulation of audio files to create a sound mass. At the moment I'm running old samples through it, but intend on using it in my final recital with either guitars or another form of distorted instrument.

That is all, for now.
From Beyond, however seem to be able to achieve this with ease. The seven track EP Drowned In Rum is a combination of slow, depressing doom and the harsh bitterness of black metal; more commonly known in the metal circles as dark metal.

The songs have a distinct black metal sounding production. The guitars, seem to be off somewhere in the distance only to be heard as they swamp the stereo field in the vast amounts of reverb that they have been given. It gives the melancholic, clean guitar parts a strong sense of isolation and the distorted guitar leads even moreso. As a bass guitar cannot be heard in the recordings, the occasional bass support the songs receive come from long string melodies with a big low end. This works very well when the guitars slowly fade out, leaving the low bass end with another slow string melody to fade in, replacing the guitars lead.

As there are no drums in the entire EP, there is no feeling of attack or pace. No matter what tremolo the guitars may be playing or what screeches the vocals may be creating, the songs linger on in their slow tread. The vocals don't have the distance that the other instruments do, however are still in a black metal combination of screams, wails and shrieks. Overall, the album seems to have developed a strong link to dark metal, with a greater emphasis on playing bleak melodies rather than playing slowly. For fans of Bethlehem and Wolves in the Throne Room, From Beyond are a local band that will help anyone find the much needed desolation in their music listening experience.

I wrote another piece today. I would not say it is the most creative, ingenious or far fetched piece, but it was inspired by the soundtrack I wrote for a Murdoch student film Wigskin. The piece is quite simple, minimalistic, and only uses 2 short tracks of audio, however the piece itself is over 16 minutes long. I've only recently referred to it as furniture music for the bored.
The first years had a listening lounge; a continuous loop where one could come and listen as they pleased. The second years produced installations, ranging from an array of old speakers run by tape decks in a stairwell, to walking around with a fish bowl on your head. The third years (Aletheia) did a live streaming performance with RMIT from the other side of the country. It was a very interesting performance. I had the task of controlling the mixer and many of the technical sides of the performance. While other third years were contributing to the audio stream with their various choice of instrument eg clarinet, synth, guitar, laptop. I have a recording of the night which I will upload once I have combined the streams.

Wednesday night just gone, I did a solo performance with the Doom patch once again. I thought I would take advantage of the space and acoustics of the KK Gallery. The piece started off rather uncontrollably, but I managed to get it together and produced some rather, demonic sounds. That recording will be uploaded soon to the downloads page.

But today! A revelation has occurred. The Doom patch is no longer a static entity, the Doom patch is now abstracted and can be arranged and manipulated allowing me to create many streams that loop into each other and wherever I would like to send them. This is a great step as this combines the melodic qualities of the Machine patch with the feedback/chaotic qualities of the Doom patch. Ultimately this allows me to do what I do in both of those patches, with one freeform abstraction. It is also going to be of awesome help when I've created my feedback chambers.

That is allTheo - Holy Thanochisthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12433356646282351375noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2383555541873182837.post-9358243155043436442010-04-16T10:58:00.002+08:002010-04-16T11:01:05.981+08:00LarvaeLast night I revisited the Doom patch. I wrote a piece using my living room and an arrangement of speakers. I've no idea of the origins of some of the sounds that were produced, they just existed. The song is called larvae for a few reasons, although the primary reason is that it sounds like larvae exploding. It was originally called Moth, but changed due to the stronger themes of larvae. Besides, people can use their imagination a bit more if it's called Larvae.

It is available for download on the downloads page.

That is allTheo - Holy Thanochisthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12433356646282351375noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2383555541873182837.post-55130717368690568362010-04-15T13:44:00.002+08:002010-04-15T13:56:55.555+08:00The AeneidGreetings,

It's been a month since my last post. Next week I have a performance at WAAPA. I've chosen to do a premier of my new Thaddaeus piece The Aeneid, based on the epic written by Virgil around 2000 years ago. It's another relatively short song, however continuing on the theme of the previous Thaddaeus song In The Autumn.

Recording to be done soon, with Sedaal adding some guest vocals.

That is all
TheoTheo - Holy Thanochisthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12433356646282351375noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2383555541873182837.post-24997314279360391822010-03-14T21:23:00.002+08:002010-03-14T21:37:22.414+08:00No Input NicecastGreetings,

For those of you who are reading this, I've continued on with my development of feedback and ways of getting feedback. This post is called No Input Nicecast, as it uses the application Nicecast, and broadcasts its own signal, back into itself; making some pretty brutal sounds at times.

I will be uploading recordings of my progress once I have it integrated with Impromptu, or something else.

That is allTheo - Holy Thanochisthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12433356646282351375noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2383555541873182837.post-79097600106846173172010-03-02T23:00:00.002+08:002010-03-02T23:07:43.587+08:00ForsakenGreetings,

I've uploaded a composition to my 4shared site (its the download link on the side) called Forsaken. I wrote this late last year, but I only recently decided to do an altered version of it and release a score. All the information is in the "Thaddaeus - Forsaken.pdf" file in the downloads site. Creating not a 2 dimensional "kaos pad" as some people do, but a 3 dimensional donut shaped pad that is imitated in a 2 dimensional field. I don't know whether someone has already attempted this idea, but it doesn't really bother me, I'm going to try anyway. With MaxMSP and the power of java(script), I will attempt to create a 3 dimensional "kaos pad".

What sounds it will make will most likely be based on white noise or sine tones, as they are pure sounds that allows for easy analysis.Theo - Holy Thanochisthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12433356646282351375noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2383555541873182837.post-6288940519268575162010-02-10T22:27:00.003+08:002010-02-10T22:35:42.564+08:00ThunderI really need to remember to fill these things in; they are, a failsafe when it comes to copyright.

Ok so, anyway, today's post is on a composition idea that I envisioned last night. The project would be called Thunder and it's purpose, well to create sounds that mimicked that of thunder. It would most likely be MaxMSP powered and would consist of a self manipulating, javascript controlled patch that records, processes and replays audio input. The patch should record the sound as it reaches a threshold, then stop the recording as it drops below the threshold, thus creating a buffer of X length. This length of the buffer would then determine the length and speed of the playback. The self manipulation would be the patch creating it's own playback timings on the fly, depending on the length of the buffers and how the playbacks interacted with each other.

The playback of these buffers would be slower than the original recording, and hopefully layered in such a way that a "thunder" effect is achieved. Whether it sounds like actual thunder would be determined by the input sound. The point of this, is to try and integrate MaxMSP with javascript, as that is something I would like to do.Theo - Holy Thanochisthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12433356646282351375noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2383555541873182837.post-42919166864247085352009-10-30T17:56:00.001+08:002009-10-30T17:56:24.281+08:00The advantages of using this patch is that I can alter the way it plays back very subtly which eventually causes massive effects. [091025 Patch 28 - Feedback Slower] Has a low playback ratio, causing the sounds to be played much lower pitched. [091025 Patch 28 - Guitar Recording] has an almost sound at some points, some of which reminds me of Sunn O))), just the tone of certain chords and notes that are held.
Another cool composition I used was a recording of the birds and various noises outside my house. The neighbours have an aviary with budgies and I thought I'd take advantage of their erratic, noisy behaviour. It apparently reminds some of the Hitchcock film The Birds, with it's intense presence.
The final piece I'll talk about in this blog is [091025 Patch 28 - Rotating Feedback] This work was about the idea around how feedback would react when the feedback loop is traveling between 4 different speakers at different times, unlike the other works where the levels between the microphone and the individual speakers remains constant. Obviously the effect can't be fully appreciated in a stereo setting, but you get the idea.Theo - Holy Thanochisthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12433356646282351375noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2383555541873182837.post-84168913688618729992009-10-30T17:28:00.001+08:002009-10-30T17:28:44.802+08:00Today's PostWorking on my patches for the upcoming installation. I needed a router with a bit more adaptability than the objects present in max. I've created an 8 channel input, 8 channel output patch thats fairly simple, called Patch 38 - "Splitter". The patch can select up to 8 inputs, or any combination to a maximum of 8 (4 different channels of input 3 and 2 of input 5) and output the channels to any number of the 8 outputs. A handy patch bay for routing the channels out of the laptops for the installation. Also in today's development I added a handy radio group to the 8 channel master control. This allows me to select any of the 8 faders, and change them with a master fader to avoid having to manually get them all to the same levels.
The first good feedback composition using the doom patch. This was in class I was explaining the system to my uni lecturer and you can hear me speaking in the background at some points, which I think makes a cool contrast to the relatively pure sine tones being created by acoustic feedback [091019 Patch 28 Feedback 2].
After this point I began writing compositions in quadrophonic in my garage using two pairs of large speaker cabs. [091019 Patch 28 - Feedback 5] Was a cool experiment, this was the second piece written in 4 channel and all I used for this was the same feedback principle, but I used the sound of rubbing my hands together as a catalyst. There is also a noticable difference in the sound, due to the size of the room and the distance the speakers are from the microphone, as the piece progresses you can hear the sounds moving further away and the resonance increasing.Theo - Holy Thanochisthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12433356646282351375noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2383555541873182837.post-90599296641087056192009-10-30T17:27:00.000+08:002009-10-30T17:28:10.265+08:00Ok, this is the post from last night, I hadn't made the blog yet.

29/10/2009 9:00PM

Drinking: Chocolate Port

Greetings,
I've decided to do yet another composition using patch 28, this time however, I will not use acoustic feedback, I will be using digital feedback going out of the soundcard and straight back in. It sounded ok, however clipping is always a serious problem when working with feedback but if used correctly it can add a great textural element to the piece. [091029 Patch 28 - Feedback 2].
Earlier today I also did a feedback recording at uni, that time however I used the inbuilt microphone and got some cool sounding results [091029 Patch 28 - Feedback].
Now, I am going to do the same feedback through the mbox but, instead of just going straight through, im going to have a small behringer mixer in the middle to try and pick up some more noise. Sounded cool, the mixer allows for a lot of experimentation and works really well with this patch [091029 Patch 28 - Feedback Mixer]. Going to grab some more cables to do some more routing. I'll plug some contact mics into the mixer to try and get something more interesting [091029 Patch 28 - Feedback Mixer 2]. The feedback didn't work as well as I would've liked, but anyway, now I'm going to through a ride cymbal into the mixer to try for some cool sounds. Sounds ok, but the mixer is too bloody noisy.

- TheoTheo - Holy Thanochisthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12433356646282351375noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2383555541873182837.post-86808849166185313252009-10-30T13:04:00.000+08:002009-10-30T13:09:32.649+08:00GreetingsHello fellow humans,

As you are hopefully aware, this is a blog documenting my musical endeavours.
